A Steelmakers Perspective
Jerry Schoen and Ed Case of AK Steel Research will share their experience and insights into the electrical steel business. This session will include an introduction to the manufacturing of grain oriented electrical steels, a view of the EPACT-2005 and DOE 2010 transformer efficiency standards from a steel producer's point of view. They will also discuss future prospects including further improvements in high-grade RGO and challenges from amorphous metals.

Historically, metal markets were driven by fundamental trends of supply and demand, coupled with the ebb and flow of economic cycles. Over the past five years, however, traditional guides have given way to structural changes in the industry, as well as the growing impact of speculative forces that no longer seem to reflect the underlying elements of the markets. This presentation will focus on the significant changes that have evolved and
examine their impact upon the metal markets with a view toward identifying the key indicators we should be focused on going forward in this volatile environment.
